The Cape Verde islands are in the Atlantic Ocean, 620km west of West Africa's coast at Mauritania and 450 km off the coast of Senegal. There are 10 major islands (9 of them inhabited) and 5 islets, all of volcanic origin and grouped into the Barlavento (Windward) group (Santo Anto, So Vicente, Santa Luzia, Ilheu Branco, Ilheu Raso, So Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista) to the north and the Sotavento (Leeward) group (Maio, So Tiago, Fogo and Brava) to the south. The interior of the main island, Sao Tiago, is mountainous, and Fogo has the islands' highest peak, Mt Fogo (2840m). Of volcanic origin and positioned between parallels 15 and 17 of the North latitude, Cape Verde islands are distinctly different types. Its six inhabited islands, located more to the West, are characterized by their mountainous landscapes, whereas the remaining three are distinguished by their long sandy beaches.

Culture
Widely known "morna", "coladeira", "funana", "mazurka", "batuko" and "contradanca" are some of its most important genres. African and Brazilian music is also very much appreciated. Due to European, African and American influences, its most expressive forms are "batik", weaving, tapestry, and several artifacts made of clay, coconut and bone. The largest handicraft - product center is the city of Mindelo, followed by the islands of Boavista, Sal, Santiago and Santo Antao.
History
The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century; Cape Verde subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Following independence in 1975, and a tentative interest in unification with Guinea-Bissau, a one-party system was established and maintained until multi-party elections were held in 1990. Cape Verde continues to exhibit one of Africa's most stable democratic governments. Repeated droughts during the second half of the 20th century caused significant hardship and prompted heavy emigration. As a result, Cape Verde's expatriate population is greater than its domestic one. Most Cape Verdeans have both African and Portuguese antecedents.
